Storms Expose Lack of Protection in Portugal

The recent storms that hit our country left a significant trail of destruction and made visible a worrying reality: there are still a large number of homes and businesses without the adequate protection of multi-risk insurance.

In just over a month, around 180,000 claims have been registered, an exceptional volume that represents a very significant slice of the usual annual total. The estimated damage already exceeds one billion euros, with hundreds of millions already paid out or in the process of being paid out to repair homes, businesses and infrastructure.

However, these figures only reflect damage covered by insurance contracts. All cases in which there was no protection are excluded, a reality that, according to experts in the sector, is still more common than we think.

The absence of multi-risk insurance, or the existence of outdated policies, means that many homeowners will have to bear the full cost of repairs. In situations of structural damage, these costs can be high, with a direct impact on the financial stability of families and the continuity of businesses.

Despite the high volume of cases, insurers have maintained an intense pace of response, with thousands of claims processed daily and a significant proportion already resolved or in the payment phase. Even so, the complexity of many processes, which depend on estimates, property validations or the completion of works, has contributed to delays in the full settlement of claims.

In addition to the immediate impact of storms, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense, including episodes of concentrated rain, strong winds, but also prolonged periods of drought and extreme heat, which increase the risk of fire and structural damage to buildings.

In this context, there is growing concern about the lack of preparation of many homeowners. The perception that “having insurance is enough” doesn't always correspond to reality, as many policies have outdated capital, limited cover or relevant exclusions that only become apparent at the time of the claim.

Hence the importance of regularly reviewing multi-risk policies, adjusting them to the real value of assets and the evolution of risks. Effective protection depends not only on the existence of insurance, but on the adequacy of cover to current needs.

The recent storms therefore act as a clear signal: the risk is increasing and protection remains, in many cases, less than necessary. In a scenario in which extreme events tend to recur, prevention and the review of policies are playing an increasingly decisive role.

Grumese is available to carry out a personalised analysis of existing policies, helping to identify gaps, update capital and ensure that each client is truly protected.

In a context where extreme phenomena tend to recur, the difference lies in being prepared before they happen.
