What representatives of foreign insurance companies do
With the rise in tourism and the increase in road traffic, accidents also tend to increase, particularly with foreign vehicles.
European insurers who do not have a presence in Portugal must appoint a representative. As the ASF says, “Insurance companies authorised to operate Compulsory Motor Third Party Liability Insurance in the European Union, andare obliged to appoint a Claims Representative in all Member States, with the exception of the State of their Head Office”.
In the event of an accident occurring in the European Union (EU), or in a third country adhering to the Green Card System, the injured party can return to the Member State of their residence and ask the Information Centre to identify the insurer of the vehicle that caused the accident, or the Claims Representative that has been appointed.
Based on this information, thehe parties concerned can then submit a claim to the designated claims representative if the accident was caused by a vehicle normally parked and insured in another Member State other than that of their residence..
